State Sen. Steve Bryles of Blytheville has formed an exploratory committee to run as a Democrat for 1st District Congress. A good addition.

Blytheville, AR  - State Senator Steve Bryles filed congressional campaign exploratory committee papers with the Federal Election Commission today.  Bryles is exploring a campaign for the First Congressional District.  Incumbent Rep. Marion Berry has announced his retirement.  The FEC filing allows Bryles to begin fundraising and establish a campaign organization.

“I have been talking with voters across the district to get an understanding of what is important to them and to gauge my candidacy.  I have learned the people want a Congressman who understands the challenges facing small business owners, farmers, everyday working folks and families.  I am hearing people tell me they want leaders to focus on creating jobs, improving education, ending partisan bickering, and getting our financial house in order.  They have told me they want affordable health care, not government mandates,” said Bryles.

Bryles, a Democrat, was elected to represent Senate District 15 in 2000.  The district encompasses Poinsett and Mississippi counties.  In the state senate, Bryles has earned a reputation as being a leader on education and economic development issues.  He worked in the cotton industry for more than 25 years.

“I am encouraged by the response I am receiving for my prospective campaign.  I am humbled by the pledges of support.  Over the next couple weeks, I will balance my work in state senate with plowing through a campaign checklist.  I plan to make a final decision on the campaign shortly,” Bryles added.

Bryles and his wife Pam are parents of one son and two daughters.  They are members of the First Presbyterian Church in Blytheville.
