Child injured

Posted By on Thu, Apr 1, 2010 at 11:10 AM

An 8-year-old special needs child in the Little Rock School District opened his bus' emergency door this morning as the bus was pulling away from a curb in Chenal and fell to the ground, suffering a severe head injury. The door, because it's an emergency door, is not locked. An alarm rings when it's opened, and the bus driver halted the bus when he heard the alarm. LRPD information officer Lt. Terry Hastings said the child is in critical condition at Arkansas Children's Hospital. He did not know which school the bus was headed to.

Hastings said the child boarded the bus around 6:55 a.m. and headed straight for the emergency door.

The police will put out a report later. UPDATE: Here's the report.
