Big fun last night at the Arkansas Times Rock Candy 500, our second edition of an all-ages Pinewood Derby race for model car lovers. That's William Purifoy, clutching his speedy "Viper," which won the first-place trophy. I was fond of the UPS truck-styled entry shown below. My own new entry was becalmed on the track on account of a design flaw on its initial run, but a pit stop at least made it capable of completing the length of the course. Enough said about that. The event at the River Market Pavilion was a benefit for the Centers for Youth and Families' Scout troop, whose members helped stage the event.

Everything that Donald Trump does — make that everything that he says — is calculated to thrill his lustiest disciples. But he is discovering that what was brilliant for a politician is a miscalculation for a president, because it deepens the chasm between him and most Americans.
  • On Charlottesville

Watching the Charlottesville spectacle from halfway across the country, I confess that my first instinct was to raillery. Vanilla ISIS, somebody called this mob of would-be Nazis. A parade of love-deprived nerds marching bravely out of their parents' basements carrying tiki torches from Home Depot.
