Double standard in Middle East

You've maybe heard by now about how 89-year-old columnist Helen Thomas put her foot, ankle, knee, etc. in her mouth with a statement about Israel. Michael Tomasky in the Guardian doesn't disagree with the criticism she's received, but he points out that better known public figures have gotten away with similar insensitivity in suggesting that other groups in the Middle East should be tossed out of their homeland. You know who. Floridian Mike Huckabee, (R-Fox.)

Tomasky quotes from Think Progress:

But are conservatives applying the religious cleansing standard equally? Consider Gov. Mike Huckabee, who has on numerous occasions voiced his opposition to a Palestinian state in Palestine, saying that "the Palestinians can create their homeland in many other places in the Middle East, outside Israel." Like the most radical right-wing elements in Israel, Huckabee's conception of Israel includes Palestinian lands occupied by Israeli forces in 1967.

Huckabee has never apologized for any of this, for the simple reason that this is what he really thinks: The Palestinians should be transferred out of Palestine. As far as I know, no conservatives have ever criticized Huckabee for these comments, let alone called on Fox News to fire him. I look forward to Ari Fleischer doing that very soon.

By the way, Huckabee had said Thomas remarks were:

"... outrageous, anti-Semitic, racist, indefensible. She says that the Jews ought to go home? Helen, they are home. Read Genesis 15, Exodus 23, Numbers 34 — that's why they are where they are. Helen, I've got a suggestion: maybe it's time for you to go home."

UPDATE: Thomas has retired and apologized.

Still more here
on Huckabee's Biblical support for running Palestinians out of Israel.

Hillary Clinton's campaign for president illustrates again the double standard applied to women. Some writers get it. They even find the supposedly unlikable Clinton inspiring.
