McChrystal gets the boot

Posted By on Wed, Jun 23, 2010 at 9:13 AM

First off, heading to a meeting with the president, the Afghanistan commander said he had NOT offered to resign. That's OK. President Obama can just fire him. And get leadership on board for the business of getting the U.S. out of Afghanistan.

UPDATE: Meet with president was brief.

UPDATE II: Not official yet, but all reporting that McChrystal is out and David Petraeus is in.

UPDATE III: It's official. The chain of command still holds meaning. I wish the president hadn't said no change in policy is anticipated.

He said he had done so not out of personal insult, but because a magazine article featuring contemptuous quotes from the general and his staff about senior administration officials had not meet standards of behavior for a commanding general, and threatened to undermine civilian control of the military.

“War is bigger than any one man or woman, whether a private, a general or president,” Mr. Obama said. “As difficult as it is to lose General McChrystal, I believe it is the right decision for national security.”
