Gail Collins’ column in today’s New York Times is a warm tribute to the grit and accomplishments of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The Republicans have made her public enemy No. 1. A bit of it is old-fashioned sexism. You know, for a woman to be that powerful, she must really be an emasculator. Then, of course, she’s from San Francisco. Enough said.
I doubt it would change minds, but Collins’ recitation of what she’s accomplished is at least cause to wonder what it is that Republicans hate so much about her. Her success, maybe? Her pragmatism, not to mention her boundless energy, help explain why such strange bedfellows as Blue Dog U.S. Reps. Marion Berry and Mike Ross have been close to her.
