Amendments in works on immigrants, casinos

Posted By on Tue, Jun 29, 2010 at 3:58 PM

Roby Brock reports that organizers of two state constitutional amendment campaigns say they'll turn in petitions with sufficident signatures to qualify for the ballot by Friday's deadline.

One is the Secure Arkansas amendment to punish undocumented aliensand anybody with a mind to help them.

The other is a Texas promoter's latest casino expansion proposal. It would allow unregulated casinos in seven counties.

Just turning in signatures doesn't mean they are valid signatures. There'll be a review and that sometimes includes an extension to cure shortcomings.

Great piece in Washington Post on the budget crisis in Louisiana. Big tax cuts and corporate welfare will do that to a state, particularly to a state whose previous governor, Republican Bobby Jindal, refused to join the Obamacare-funded Medicaid expansion. There's a lesson there for Arkansas.
