How bad is the Gulf of Mexico?

Posted By on Thu, Jul 8, 2010 at 10:42 AM

Stumbled across this scary story in my hometown Louisiana newspaper. There are 27,000 abandoned oil and gas wells in the Gulf of Mexico. How well were they sealed? Is anybody checking the status of temporarily abandoned wells? Answer: 1) Who knows? 2) No.

Another big question is whether the government will get serious about oversight in ocean drilling after the BP disaster or whether Bobby Jindal's cry for a speedy return to drilling business as usual (with unlimited federal bailout when things go wrong) will prevail.

  • Another Republican miracle-working governor

Great piece in Washington Post on the budget crisis in Louisiana. Big tax cuts and corporate welfare will do that to a state, particularly to a state whose previous governor, Republican Bobby Jindal, refused to join the Obamacare-funded Medicaid expansion. There's a lesson there for Arkansas.
