LR housecleaning doesn't take

  • CODE RED: LR code enforcement efforts to clean up an abandoned house several blocks from City Hall have fallen short.

What a difference four weeks make — not. On July 1, after repeated complaints by neighbors, code enforcement officers cleaned the yard and interior of the historic White-Baucum House at 201 Izard of several truckloads of trash left by vagrants living there. Today, there is trash all over the front porch, a door propped on the bushes, a street sign lying in the yard, and a broken window on the south side of the house. On the east side of the house, a huge dumpster stands overloaded, carpet and other detritus ripped from the house spilling out into an alley. Code enforcement supervisor Sheila Reynolds said the agent for the house, which has been vacant for some time, brought the dumpster in. She didn't know why it was still there.

Since code enforcement boarded the house up, things could be worse. But windows upstairs in the house are open, so it's possible folks have found a way to get past the plywood. Or cleaning folk just left them open a month ago.

UPDATE: Reynolds calls to say that the agent - McKinney Realtors — says the dumpster will be removed in the morning and a construction crew will be there at 7 a.m. to clean up the new mess. Reynolds said the owner, whom she believes to be a bank that repossessed the house, is spending $5,000 cleaning the place up. She she told them they'd have to stay on top of it to keep it that way.
