Gay marriage ban may be lifted next week

A federal judge in California said today he'd lift the Prop. 8 ban on same-sex marriage — which he has ruled unconstitutional — on Aug. 18. But he delayed an immediate lifting of the ban so an appeals court could hear an argument from ban supporters to keep it in place.

Couples had lined up at courthouses around California to obtain marriage licenses in anticipation the ban would be immediately lifted.
