A Democrat-Gazette story this morning says the count at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is now 658 vehicles and 613 employees.

It’s too old to find in our on-line archives, but I seem to remember when the Arkansas Times first reported that Game and Fish vehicles outnumbered employees, back in the late 20th century, vehicles and employees numbered in the high 300s or low 400s. So the fleet has grown in step with staffing.

What hasn’t changed in the last 15 years or so is a complete lack of concern at the agency or among the commissioners that there could be anything amiss in such a generous auto policy. Why isn’t there a motor pool for headquarters people? Do I remember correctly that one agency official in the old days once had two vehicles at his disposal, for street and off-road? Maybe I’m just dreaming that.
