School election day

Some critical school elections today. In Little Rock, the future of Superintendent Linda Watson could be on the line in the contest between incumbent Micheal Daugherty, who supports Watson, and Michael Nellums, the Mills High principal who is being supported by people who think Watson should be in her last year as superintendent.

In Pulaski County, two contested races pit committed union foes — incumbents Charlie Wood and Danny Gilliland — against candidates, Gloria Lawrence and Tom Stuthard, supported by the teachers union.

Interesting the anti-union Democrat-Gazette took a total pass on endorsements in the Pulaski County races where, if anything, the union issue is more sharply drawn. Of course they'd have had to side with Charlie Wood, who posted on Facebook an endorsement of himself that he claimed was written to appear in the D-G. Not exactly a recommendation of his trustworthiness. Just endorsing the other union hater, Gilliland, might have required a mention of ol' Charlie, who, Dawn Jackson's blog notes, was out campaigning at a school yesterday despite a Board policy against using schools for political purpose. There's also the question of whether a newspaper endorsement is of much value anyway. D-G support has frequently been the kiss of death in Little Rock School District races. Nellums got it this time.

Races such as these are just about impossible to predict. Turnout and motivated voters are everything.
