Lincoln's fair attack on 'Fair' Tax

Posted By on Tue, Sep 28, 2010 at 9:20 AM

Funny. When the fall senatorial campaign got underway, Rep. John Boozman said just because he sponsored the 30 percent national sales tax known as the "Fair" Tax didn't mean he supported it. Since then, he's made it quite clear how enamored he is of it. The Republican Party is busy now defending the fairness of this incredibly unfair tax, relying on the testimony of a Republican Arkansas blogger.

I'd prefer to rely on, to name one, factcheck.org. But there are dozen of others to demonstrate that — even with the "prebate" of roughly $500 a month — this tax will be regressive, taking a bigger share of the income of the working poor and middle class than current taxes and giving the wealthy a bonanza beyond dream.

And this presumes the Fair Tax rate at 30 percent will be revenue neutral and enough to support the likes of Social Security and Medicare along with the rest of federal government. And it doesn't begin to take into account all the special pleading sure to ensue — a continuation of the home mortgage tax break, to name just one. Give some thought, too, to to the bureaucracy necessary to insure that the tax is collected on all transactions contemplated. (Mike Huckabee, laughably, has claimed it will be collected from whores and dope pushers. By whose army?) It's one of those things that sounds so simple, so easy, so fair, but is ever so complicated and unfair.
