State Ed. board nixes charters

Posted By on Mon, Nov 8, 2010 at 12:24 PM

A rough ride before the state Board of Education today on new charter school applications. A school propopsed for Little Rock to serve dropouts was delayed for more study. It had been supported by the Little Rock School District.

The Board denied a charter school requested for Gillett, opposed by neighboring district, over questions about the ability to meet minimum course requirements. On the surface, the proposal has the appearance of an end-around consolidation.

The Board also denied an application for an open enrollment charter school for grades 5-12 in Forrest City. Board members said they were concerned about a new charter shortly after approval of a conversion charter school in the district. The application came from a charter school concern said to have been mentioned in the highly touted documentary "Waiting for Superman."

Details on all three applications at the Education Department's blog.

UPDATE: Same link will take you two additional actions — denial of a charter school in McNeil and approval of one in Pine Bluff.
