Texas' war on the poor

Posted By on Fri, Nov 12, 2010 at 6:25 AM

Texas Republicans are more serious than ever about getting out of Medicaid, the federal health coverage program for the poor, and similarly compassionate thinkers in other states are getting on the bandwagon. Quibbles: It would devastate the health care industry, be ruinous for the poor and elderly and create new costs for local taxpayers. Interesting factoid in the article. Gov. Rick Perry is always touting Texas job creation. A quarter of the new jobs in Texas the last five years were in the health industry. Oh, and there's this great irony: The conservatives touting this idea think you could shift Medicaid recipients into state insurance exchanges established by the hated health care reform law. (You apparently can't.)

Bottom line: The only thing likely to happen is pressure for the federal government to send still more money to the states for medical care.
