The Arkansas Society of Freethinkers announces it will again have its winter solstice display on the south end of the Capitol grounds, with a lighting ceremony planned after the Little Rock Christmas parade Dec. 4.

Incoming secretary of state Mark Martin's view on such displays? We shall see.

Tis the season for celebration. It’s that time of year again when just about everyone in the community is celebrating for one reason or another. Hanukkah starts this week for our Jewish neighbors, Muharram is the coming of the new year for our Islamic neighbors, Yule arrives for our pagan neigbhors at the same time society switches at the Winter Solstice, from Fall to Winter, Humanists will be celebrating their HumanLight, and there’s even the Festivus for those not attached to any particular worldview, and we round out the holidays with Christmas, celebrated by our Christian neighbors, and Kwansaa follows just before we hit New Year’s Eve.

The Arkansas Society of Freethinkers invites everyone out this Saturday, December 4th, to see us in Little Rock’s annual
Big Jingle Jubilee Holiday Parade at 3pm. The parade route starts at 2nd and Broadway and runs south to Captiol Avenue, then takes a right turn to head west on Capitol ending up at the State Capitol where soon after there will be the Capitol Lighting Ceremony. The parade is a free, family-friendly event.

While at the Capitol, be sure to head over to the south end of the Capitol complex where we will light our Winter Solstice display. The four sided display is decked out in holiday fashion with lights and garland. The four sides showcase the history of the Solstice and Solstice festivities through the ages, what a freethinker is and famous freethinkers past and present, a wall of knowledge with books on science and religion, and a Did You Know side with tidbits of information on science and man’s accumulation of knowledge.

Thank you for your time and we hope to see you this weekend.

Happy Holidays,
LeeWood Thomas
