John Brummett today considers House Speaker Robert Moore’s so-far lonely voice in support of raising taxes for highway construction. Main point: It’s past time thinking that building highways is the salvation to dying rural communities. (And, I’d add, giving away tax money to private enterprise is no better a cure for what ails us.) You need good ideas; bold thinkers; fine education (that’s something the state can provide). Did Northwest Arkansas explode because of highway construction? As anyone who lives up there can tell you, it did not.
