Doctors optimistic about Giffords' recovery

Posted By on Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 9:39 AM

Doctors say they are confident that U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will survive the gunshot wound to her head and also optimistic she will not survive in a vegetative state. Sounds like a measurable improvement in the news. Another news conference is scheduled this morning. UPDATE: Doctors say she's no longer on a breathing tube breathing on her own and is alert and responding to doctors. This article clarifies that while she's breathing on her own, the breathing tube has been kept in place as a precaution.

UPDATE II: A neighbor speaks after visiting with the parents of suspected shooter Jared Loughner.
