If a Democrat had done this ...

... a Republican Party news release probably would have read:

" A Democratic legislator has proposed a ONE HUNDRED PERCENT INCREASE in working men and women's car title fees to help provide millions in new taxpayer money for STATE EMPLOYEE PENSIONS."

The truth is that the State Police pension system is underfunded and Republican State Rep. Michael Lamoureux has proposed increasing the duplicate title fee from $1 to $2 and the title application fee from $4 to $8 in what, it is hoped, will be a one-time fix for the actuarial shortfall.

Sounds OK to me (though we're never going to get a complete fix on defined benefit public pensions until we further extend the required service period and set older retirement dates). But it is interesting in this legislative session whenever any support can be rounded up for a tax/fee increase, no matter how worthy.

The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality has denied a new permit for the C&H Hog Farms' concentrated animal feeding operation near Mount Judea (Newton County). This is a big and somewhat surprising victory for critics who have viewed C&H's large-scale pig farm and the pig waste it generates as an existential threat to the Buffalo National River.

Hillary Clinton's campaign for president illustrates again the double standard applied to women. Some writers get it. They even find the supposedly unlikable Clinton inspiring.
