The South loves Huckabee

Posted By on Wed, Mar 2, 2011 at 11:13 AM

Politico must love Mike Huckabee. It wraps up polling of primary voters in 11 Southern states by saying Huckabee "swamps" the competition for the Republican nomination.

That is, in a poll of Southern Republican voters, Huckabee enjoyed 22 percent support, compared with 13 for Newt Gingrich, his next closest rival. Sounds more like an open contest when 22 percent is the best any one candidate (and that one a candidate with previous Southern experience) can muster.

Nonetheless, Huckabee's uninformed remarks yesterday about Barack Obama's heritage couldn't have hurt him with Republican primary voters in the South.

  • Cats and dogs

I've always been leery of people who dislike animals. To my wife and me, a house without dog hair in the corners and a cat perched on the windowsill is as barren as a highway rest stop. We're down to three dogs and two cats, the smallest menagerie we've had for years.
