Mark Martin jacks up parking fees

Posted By on Mon, Jun 13, 2011 at 10:04 AM

Republican Secretary of State Mark Martin has promised to get government off your back, to cut costs, to fight taxes and fees, etc.

So, wouldn't you know it? He's proposed a whopping 38.8 percent fee increase for people who rent parking spaces in the lot across Woodlane from the Capitol. Letter today announces the fee will go up from $180 to $250 a year. (This is still a heckuva sweetheart deal for lobbyists, by the way. They control most of the lot leaving the public at large to scramble and joust with LRPD over metered spots during the legislative session.)

Maybe if he hadn't employed several political hatchet men, bought a fancy new SUV or gone on a fancy staff retreat he wouldn't have felt the "cost pressures" to increase parking rates.

I've asked his deputy Alice Stewart about the increase. She'd said last week that he'd be chopping his budget.

UPDATE: The office's new spokesman provides an answer:

We are increasing the fee for spots in the Wood Lane Parking Area from $15 a month to about $20.84 a month. This participatory program includes parking within close proximity to the capitol, and an employee that monitors the lot during the day. The money collected goes towards general maintenance of the lot including but not limited to restriping, repaving, and upkeep of pedestrian signs, as well as upkeep of the area around the lot. This increase will affect approximately 158 parking spots. We do not rent out spaces on a daily basis. We bill people on a yearly basis. They are billed on July 1. Please keep in mind that when the Legislature is in session, parking is a hot commodity in the capitol complex.

It was not even 24 hours ago that Sophia Said, director of the Interfaith Center; City Director Kathy Webb and others decided to organize a protest today of Donald Trump's executive order that has left people from Muslim countries languishing in airports or unable to come to the US at all — people with visas, green cards,a  post-doc graduate student en route to Harvard, Google employees abroad, families. I got the message today before noon; others didn't find out until it was going on. But however folks found out, they turned out in huge numbers, more than thousand men, women and children, on the grounds of the state Capitol to listen to speakers from all faiths and many countries.
