Little Rock, flush with money, bucks trend

Posted By on Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 6:44 AM

The New York Times today reports gloomy news for the nation's cities, battered by declining property values (source of property taxes) and also sales tax revenues hit by the Internet and the recession. Jobs and services are being cut.

Not here in Little Rock, of course. It soon will be collecting an additional $1 million per week in sales taxes on groceries and everything else. It's so flush that it has money to raise everybody's pay and pension and still have extra to give away in corporate welfare handouts. If North Little Rock Mayor Pat Hays is successful, higher taxes will soon have North Little Rock rolling in dough, too, though it's always had the benefit of a lucrative hidden tax on electricity to shore it up against hard times.

Surely prosperity will follow.
