Push for fancy Broadway Bridge begins Friday

REPLACEMENT WANTED: Broadway Bridge.
  • REPLACEMENT WANTED: Broadway Bridge.
Metroplan announces a press conference Friday morning to begin a push for a community process to encourage design ideas for the replacement Broadway Bridge.

Background: The powers that be have determined they want an iconic design — read, more expensive than the money the state has on hand to replace the concrete structure — and the community process is intended to produce a groundswell for a fancy design. That, in turn, will require one of those vaunted public-private partnerships. Private interests will contribute their cheers to the idea of the public putting another sales tax on themselves to pay for the new community icon.

Which reminds me: With the election less than a month off, has North Little Rock Mayor Pat Hays published any real specifics yet about how he proposes to spend the extra penny he's seeking? It will put the total sales tax tariff at 12 cents on every dollar spent at McDonald's in NLR.
