Crystal Bridges offers press preview

Posted By on Mon, Oct 24, 2011 at 2:32 PM

Press got a tour today of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, opening Nov. 11 in Bentonville.

Leslie Newell Peacock will have a lot more on her Rock Candy blog and in the print edition of the newspaper, but she offers a quick take here. It now includes a slide show with 97 images from Brian Chilson's day in Bentonville.

Posted here are a few of the shots Brian Chilson took today, including a typical gallery space, the light-filled tunnel that is 11, the museum restaurant, and the Charles Willson Peale painting of George Washington that was one of the museum's early acquisitions.

The museum is the project of Walmart heir Alice Walton, shown meeting reporters today, and funded by $1.4 billion or more in family contributions, plus sizeable donations from other philanthropists. She was on hand today to talk to the visiting media group about the project. Her favorite painting? After asking reporters about their favorites, she said one of hers was a small oil painting of a haystack by Martin Johnson Heade. It was a painting she took from her home and gave to the museum.

The scope, as depicted in Brian Chilson's photos, is overwhelming. I've included one of the examples of modern art on the jump, where gallery installations are still in progress, but it's impossible do justice to the project without dozens of photos. UPDATE: Here's Brian's Facebook posting of his tour today.
