There was no $16 muffin

This yarn has traveled around the world so many times it will never be supplanted by the facts:

But, just for the record, that $16 muffin at a Washington hotel wasn't — it was the cost of muffin, beverages and service and reflected the cost of rooms provided at no charge for the conference.

In a new introduction to a revised report issued on Friday, the Office of the Inspector General said it had reviewed additional paperwork and now agreed that its conclusions “were incorrect and that the Department did not pay $16 per muffin.”

Put it in the Al Gore Fractured Fables file, also never to be corrected.
