Wednesday night line

It's open. Final thoughts:

* ATTORNEY-CLIENT PRIVILEGE: I mentioned yesterday a complaint from an out-of-state lawyer about Arkansas lawyers who didn't report potential juror misconduct in one of the West Memphis Three cases in 1994. I said then that the lawyers have always explained that there were bound to silence by the attorney-client relationship. One of those lawyers, Lloyd Warford, elaborated on that in a comment to Mara Leveritt.

* GO, NEWT, GO: CNN polling says Mitt Romney's lead over Newt Gingrich is shrinking in South Carolina. Nobody ever hurt themselves by race-baiting in the state that gave us Fort Sumter.

* TARGETING CIGARETTE MONEY: Sen. Bill Pritchard, an old fan of drug courts, is leading a legislative charge to raid tobacco settlement money for drug courts. Gov. Mike Beebe is opposed.

* BEEBE: LIKE I SAID BEFORE, NO STATE EMPLOYEE PAY RAISES: He reiterated today. Also said he wasn't inclined to further bailout a fund that pays court personnel with special court revenues. Courts will either have to figure out how to step up collections or "reprioritize" expenses.

The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality has denied a new permit for the C&H Hog Farms' concentrated animal feeding operation near Mount Judea (Newton County). This is a big and somewhat surprising victory for critics who have viewed C&H's large-scale pig farm and the pig waste it generates as an existential threat to the Buffalo National River.
