Video: Gabby Giffords resigns from Congress

Posted By on Sun, Jan 22, 2012 at 3:24 PM

I'm going to open the open line early. Rep. Gabby Giffords' announcement of her resignation from Congress, effective tomorrow, requires no further comment.

* WOMEN'S BODIES: Republican politicians in Arkansas made their obligatory appearance at the annual anti-abortion march today. I've not yet seen a report where one of those politicians said they'd stand against Republican policies that make contraception more available to help prevent unwanted and problem pregnancies that can lead to abortion. Nor did any say their position recognized women firist in their legislating. None said, much as they opposed abortion, they stood against efforts to prevent women from receiving a pill after a rape to prevent pregnancy.

Pro-Choice America reminds us that pregnancy begins with women, their interests not much in evidence at today's march, as usual. U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin was on the battle line today against choice, including ready access to contraception. To double down his right-wing orthodoxy, he did favor choice today insofar as it would allow destruction of the public schools by announcing his support for the Koch-sponsored "school choice" (kill public educaiton with vouchers) week.

* SLAYING/KIDNAPPING IN ARKADELPHIA: Authorities are searching for a man believed to have killed Sandy Carl Huckabee in his Arkadelphia home and abducted his wife. Huckabee is a cousin of the former governor, Mike Huckabee. Huckabee's father and his father were first cousins.
