The Sierra Club continues to tout fringe benefits from its deal to settle the fight against SWEPCO's coal-burning power plant in Hempstead County. Here, it's expenditure in Arkansas on manufacturing for wind energy components.

NEWS RELEASE

LM Wind Power, which makes wind-turbine blades at a plant in Little Rock, will make 150 blades for an Oklahoma firm that will sell electricity to Southwestern Electric Power Co., the utility said Thursday.

SWEPCO said Wednesday that it had agreed to buy more than 350 megawatts of electricity from three midwestern firms during the next 20 years to meet the requirements of a legal settlement SWEPCO made with environmental groups over construction of the $2.1 billion, 600-megawatt coal-fired John W. Turk Jr. power plant in Hempstead County.

More than 200 megawatts of that power will be purchased from Canadian Hills Wind LLC west of Oklahoma City. Canadian Hills has a contract with LM Wind Power for 50 sets of three blades each.

Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority, a co-owner of the Turk plant, also signed a 25-year agreement to buy almost 50 megwatts from Canadian Hills.
