Campaign begins to vote Benton County wet

With seed money from Walmart fortune heirs, a campaign has begun to vote Benton County wet. It's one of the dampest counties anywhere, with dozens of "private club" permits at restaurants. But a wet vote would allow beer in retail stores and liquor stores.

It will take almost 40,000 signatures to get the measure on the November ballot. That's a stiff requirement. It stems from a law requiring 38 percent of voters in a political jurisdiction to call a wet vote. The law was sponsored by then-Sen. Lu Hardin.

The new group, Keep Dollars in Benton County, has hired a company to gather signatures and also commissioned a study to demonstrate the positive economic impact of a wet vote. No filing papers from the group are available yet on the state Ethics Commission website.

Here's the group's news release.

Here's a link to the study near at the University of Arkansas on the idea.

PS — Under state law, a wet Benton County could qualify for up to 50 liquor store permits.
