City promises crackdown on yard parking

Posted By on Tue, Mar 6, 2012 at 2:25 PM

An ordinance meant to discourage people from parking in yards in Little Rock didn't produce much. So the city has stiffened enforcement and penalties and will announce Thursday a new crackdown on the offense. Says a news release:

On March 8, 2012 City of Little Rock Staff will begin enforcing new provisions of the current “Parking in Yard” ordinance. The new provisions will allow both Housing Code and Planning Code Staff to immediately issue citations when they witness a violation.

At a news conference to be held on March 7, 2012 at 1:30 p.m., a new flier will be introduced. It will note changes in the original ordinance: specifically, that violators may be cited immediately and that the citation carries a fifty ($50) dollar fine. In addition, it will announced that Staff will be adjusting normal work hours for Code Officers in the mornings, evenings and on weekends to ensure violations are addressed. Staff will continue to respond to complaints and will issue citations during Code Enforcement “sweeps” and during their regular course of business in the neighborhoods.

Code Enforcement Officers and concerned citizens will be on hand to discuss the new provisions of the parking in yards ordinance and what this will mean for Little Rock neighborhoods.

Suggestion for next crackdown: The burglars-in-house and car-breakin problems.

And while I'm ragging city government: The new green recycling monsters are being rolled out. Alas, people don't pay much attention to mail or news conferences and it appears many didn't know what to do with them just yet. So some started using them. No pickups in most areas until April 2. You'll get another mailing. I think an informational sticker on the bins might have helped.
