UPDATE: Five dead in a Jacksonville duplex fire

Posted By on Thu, Mar 22, 2012 at 1:01 PM

A maintenance man found the bodies of a 31-year-old woman and her four children, all under 11, after a neighbor reported smelling smoke in a Jacksonville low-income housing duplex. The man entered the apartment at 7 a.m. Tuesday, an hour after firefighters arrived and left, because no one responded to their knocks and they didn't find any signs of fire using thermal imaging.

When firefighters returned to the duplex later, there was no fire, but there were signs that a fire burned overnight.

The cause is still being investigated, and no names have been released.

UPDATE: An extensive report can be found here.

  • Trump immigration protest at LR: Quick and fierce

It was not even 24 hours ago that Sophia Said, director of the Interfaith Center; City Director Kathy Webb and others decided to organize a protest today of Donald Trump's executive order that has left people from Muslim countries languishing in airports or unable to come to the US at all — people with visas, green cards,a  post-doc graduate student en route to Harvard, Google employees abroad, families. I got the message today before noon; others didn't find out until it was going on. But however folks found out, they turned out in huge numbers, more than thousand men, women and children, on the grounds of the state Capitol to listen to speakers from all faiths and many countries.
