Posted By on Thu, May 17, 2012 at 9:15 AM

Little Rock police say Darrell Winfrey, 45, was fatally stabbed shortly after midnight last night by a 15-year-old girl who said she was defending her mother from attacks by Winfrey, her mother's live-in boyfriend. They'd apparently broken up earlier in the day.

The police narrative:

On May 17, 2012, at approximately 0005 hrs officers responded to a Cutting Just Occurred at 9712 Labette Dr. Upon arrival they learned the victim had been transported to Baptist Health Medical Center ER by private vehicle. The officers made contact with a 15 year old female who advised that Mr. Darrell Winfrey, BM, DOB 10/06/1967, was the live in boyfriend of her mother, Ms. Kim Caffey, BF, DOB 03/26/1974. The female said Mr. Winfrey and her mother had broken up earlier in the day and Mr. Winfrey had returned and pulled Ms. Caffey out of the house by her hair and began to beat Ms. Caffey. The 15 year old said she got a knife to scare Mr. Winfrey and get him to stop beating her mother. Mr. Winfrey was striking her in the front yard of the house when she approached and stabbed Mr. Winfrey in the neck with a knife. Mr. Winfrey was pronounced dead at Baptist E.R. a short while after arrival. Homicide detectives and C.S.S.U. were called and responded to the scene. This incident is still under investigation at this time. No charges at this time and the file will be sent to the Prosecutor for review. The 15 year old is a juvenile and her name cannot be released.

It was not even 24 hours ago that Sophia Said, director of the Interfaith Center; City Director Kathy Webb and others decided to organize a protest today of Donald Trump's executive order that has left people from Muslim countries languishing in airports or unable to come to the US at all — people with visas, green cards,a  post-doc graduate student en route to Harvard, Google employees abroad, families. I got the message today before noon; others didn't find out until it was going on. But however folks found out, they turned out in huge numbers, more than thousand men, women and children, on the grounds of the state Capitol to listen to speakers from all faiths and many countries.
