Highway police make marijuana bust

Posted By on Thu, Jul 19, 2012 at 10:31 AM

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department announced today that its highway police had found 80 pounds of marijuana Monday after stopping a Chevy Impala for speeding near Benton on Interstate 30.

I've asked about how often highway police make speeding stops of passenger cars. The agency description notes drug interdiction as among key duties, along with motor carrier law enforcement.

Said a Department spokesman: "The Arkansas Highway Police have full law enforcement authority. If they witness a violation of some sort, they are required to take action." He added that the vehicle was first pulled over for impeding traffic.
