Is the U.S. better off today?

Democrats are now on message — the U.S. is better off today than it was in the final days of the Bush administration. I'm OK with that. Any day the country isn't led by GWB is a better day. But it's going to be a hard sell for voters (a pool diminished by Republican vote suppression tactics and general lack of enthusiasm), even discounting Paul Ryan's serial lies on everything from economic figures to his marathon time.
