Judicial races begin

Posted By on Mon, May 20, 2013 at 2:18 PM

Judicial candidates may not formally begin campaigns until one year before an election. That's today for 2014 judicial elections, held the same day as party primaries with runoffs, if necessary, in November.

There'll be lots more of these, but this one came in first and it's for a local judgeship:

Mike Reif said he's running for 13th division circuit court, a seat from which Judge Collins Kilgore is expected to retire. Reif has practiced 29 years with the Little Rock firm of Dover, Dixon, Horne.

Pulaski County attorney Mike Reif announced Monday his candidacy for the Pulaski and Perry County
CircuitCourt, 13th Division to fill the vacancy created by the upcoming retirement of Judge Collins
Kilgore. The cases assigned to this division are civil, domestic and probate law, and Reif’s law practice
focuses on those areas as well as conducting mediations. Reif, a certified mediator, has practiced 29
years with the Little Rock law firm Dover, Dixon, Horne, PLLC.

“I’m running because I see children of all ages being torn apart emotionally by bitter divorce battles.
I’ve seen cases where parents fighting over custody don’t take the time to stop and look at the long term
damage they’re causing,” Reif says.

“I believe children shouldn’t be the parent’s battleground. Accountability is the cornerstone of our
justice system, and judges must take the extra step to protect our children,” he said.
Reif has already served asspecial judge for this and other circuit courts. “I listen to people, and what I
am hearing is they want a justice system that holds fighting parents accountable,” he says.

“I also don’t believe in wasting time or money with drawn-out lawsuits where it sure seems that only the
lawyers win,” Reif added.

Reif lives in Little Rock with Ellen, his wife of 24 years and their three children. The nonpartisan
judicial election will take place on May 20, 2014.
