Newspaper consolidation with an Arkansas angle

Posted By on Tue, Aug 20, 2013 at 2:18 PM

The Magnolia Reporter sends along an interesting link to a story about how GateHouse Media, a New York company that operates more than 300 newspapers in 21 states, is opening a "Center for News and Design" in Austin, Texas, to consolidate much of the editing and production for its newspapers in one place. The Gannett Corp. and others have done this as a job-trimming, profit-building tactic.

Newspaper traditionalists think a little something is lost when, for example, copy editing for a Lafayette, La., newspaper is done in Kalamazoo, where you don't find many Delahoussayes.

No word yet what this might mean for current staffing at individual GateHouse newspapers. It lists these properties in Arkansas: Daily papers in Arkadelphia, Helena-West Helena, Hope and Stuttgart; weekly paers in Gurdon, Heber Springs, Newport, Prescott and White Hall. It also has some other shoppers.
