Arkansas National Guard to follow federal directive on processing benefit applications from same-sex couples

The Arkansas National Guard says it will follow a Defense Department directive in processing applications for benefits — if any — for same-sex married couples. None has applied yet.

Texas and Mississippi, citing constitutional bans on same-sex marriage, say they won't do it.

It's demagoguic and hateful nonsense. If the U.S. Supreme Court matters, federally provided benefits cannot be denied legally married couples who happen to have the misfortune to live in a state that discriminates. The states that resist merely place an additional burden of discrimination on such military couples. In Republicanland, you can't wave patriotism and military service around too much, unless you happen to be a gay member of the military.

Gov. Mike Beebe tells Stephens Media he's researching the matter but inclined to follow the federal directive. Good inclination.
