The line is open.

* THAT'S OUR BOY: I'd like to mention a nice piece of news in the release yesterday of the names of those who passed the July Arkansas Bar Exam. High score went to none other than John Charles Williams, former associate editor of the Arkansas Times, who for reasons unclear left the highly rewarding field of alternative weekly journalism several years ago to get a law degree at Vanderbilt. He is now back in Little Rock ready to embark on a legal career — and also to marry Eliza Borne, a former Arkansas Times intern who is now an associate editor at Oxford American. It's not often I get to imitate High Profile with a wedding announcement, but it pleases me to be able to do so today. John did a lot of great work for us, but this one still stands out — a thoughtful piece on a challenge to the death penalty.

* FOOTBALL FUN: Latest news is that Hendrix College remains undefeated in football for almost 53 years. It defeated Westminster today 46-44, the first Hendrix football game since November 18, 1960. It was a thriller. 25-yard field goal with one second left won it for the Warriors.

But did they win the tailgate? The 98-degree temperatures didn't stop a huge crowd from forming on the War Memorial Park golf course for Hog tailgate festivities.

It was not even 24 hours ago that Sophia Said, director of the Interfaith Center; City Director Kathy Webb and others decided to organize a protest today of Donald Trump's executive order that has left people from Muslim countries languishing in airports or unable to come to the US at all — people with visas, green cards,a  post-doc graduate student en route to Harvard, Google employees abroad, families. I got the message today before noon; others didn't find out until it was going on. But however folks found out, they turned out in huge numbers, more than thousand men, women and children, on the grounds of the state Capitol to listen to speakers from all faiths and many countries.
