Clear your calendar for Sept. 21. That's when the Second Annual Arkansas Times Festival of Ideas is happening at venues throughout downtown. A number of those featured in this week's Arkansas Visionaries cover story will be offering demonstrations and lectures. It's sort like a local version of TED Talks, or like a series of Clinton School lectures.

The event runs from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Clinton School, Heifer International, Historic Arkansas Museum and Old State House. All of the programs are free and open to the public, but reservations are requested. See the full lineup and reserve your seat here.

A couple of panel discussions we're especially excited about:

*2 p.m. at the Old State House: "Rehabilitate of incarcerate? Crime and parole in Little Rock" with Sen. David Sanders, Mayor Mark Stodola and City Director Ken Richardson.

*4 p.m. at the Clinton School: "Fostering a start-up culture in Arkansas" with state Economic Development chief Grant Tennille, the University of Arkansas's Carol Reeves, new Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub head Warwick Sabin, Yelp's Luther Lowe and Bourbon and Boots' Matt Price

Gospel and R&B singer and civil rights activist Mavis Staples, who has been inspiring fans with gospel-inflected freedom songs like "I'll Take You There" and "March Up Freedom's Highway" and the poignant "Oh What a Feeling" will come to Little Rock for the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the desegregation of Central High.
  • Klan's president

Everything that Donald Trump does — make that everything that he says — is calculated to thrill his lustiest disciples. But he is discovering that what was brilliant for a politician is a miscalculation for a president, because it deepens the chasm between him and most Americans.
  • On Charlottesville

Watching the Charlottesville spectacle from halfway across the country, I confess that my first instinct was to raillery. Vanilla ISIS, somebody called this mob of would-be Nazis. A parade of love-deprived nerds marching bravely out of their parents' basements carrying tiki torches from Home Depot.
  • Lynchings hidden in the history of the Hot Springs Confederate monument

Hot Springs twice erupted into the kind of violence that has its roots in the issues left unresolved by the Civil War, and both times, it happened right where that monument to Confederate soldiers stands today.
