The good Mike Huckabee: Questions GOP for forcing government shutdown

LET DEMS OWN OBAMACARE: Advice from Mike Huckabee against forcing shutdown.
  • LET DEMS OWN OBAMACARE: Advice from Mike Huckabee against forcing shutdown.
Every now and then, Mike Huckabee will do or say the unexpected. As quoted here on Stateline
On his evening talk radio show on WROK last week, former Republican Presidential candidate and noted conservative Mike Huckabee was lamenting House Republicans' push to either defund 'Obamacare' or shut down the government. The former Arkansas Governor is one of the few conservative commentators who has served in elective office, and seems to understand the political peril to his party better than most. "We don't have the votes to defeat 'Obamacare'" Huckabee told his audience, "so what's the point of a government shutdown other than to just make people mad at us?"

Huckabee's argument was that his party needs to focus on winning elections by not taking on fights which will only cost them votes. The government shutdown will not earn the GOP any votes they are not already getting, but has the potential to cost them plenty of those which they have been working to attract.
When Huckabee is right he's right. How can you claim the high ground when you don't have the votes to legitimately defeat the issue on which you've held the country hostage?

Of course, Huck is good at sensing parade formation and jumping to the front. The above is subject to change.

But, in a show monologue last weekend, he was explicit. Republicans should LET Obamacare take effect and all its certain ills be visited on the U.S.

The plan to tie a defunding of Obamacare in the House to budget passage might sound bold and daring, but might only serve to give Democrats cover from having to defend their having hoisted this monstrosity on an American public who doesn’t want it and who will suffer because of it. Obamacare grinds more Americans in to the dirt of joblessness and poverty, the Republicans have a clear and defining message to take into the 2014 elections where they could be in a strong position to take control of the Senate and prepare to reclaim the White House in 2016.

... The President and the Democrats lit the match of Obamacare. Let them defend it. Why hand them a hose when they are determined to play with gasoline and burn their own house down? No need to burn ours down too.

Good points. I hope Obamacare works. But if Republicans are so certain it won't, what's to fear by letting Democrats "own it"?

Note that implicit in his remarks is Republican responsibility for the shutdown, something that lying Arkansas Republicans are desperately spinning differently.
