The wintry mix open line

Posted By on Sun, Dec 29, 2013 at 4:40 PM

I stopped by a grocery store to buy a bag of frozen vegetables for soup. Forgot that there's a small chance of snow in forecast tonight. A little zany. Otherwise, not much happening.

* BUT DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?: From a New York Times article on difficulties facing Democrats in West Virginia:

A key U.S. Senate candidates is distancing herself from the White House. Every county in a state with a historic Democratic voter  edge went for Romney in 2012. And this:

But the Appalachian region of West Virginia and parts of Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee, which had stayed faithfully Democratic even as Southern whites abandoned the party, have more recently been defecting over issues that are as much cultural as economic.

Many of the poorest counties in West Virginia, which are among the most dependent in the nation on food stamps, unemployment insurance and other federal benefits, voted most heavily for Mitt Romney in 2012.

The key matchup, between female candidates, does feature a generally well-liked Republican with some record of aisle-crossing. That does NOT sound much like the Republican hope in the Arkansas Senate race, Tom Cotton, an outlier even within his own party at times for his extreme views.

Arkansas and West Virginia are key pieces in Republican's optimism about regaining a Senate majority.
