Wendy Davis goes under the press microscope, caught on some personal details

Texas Sen. Wendy Davis, who rose to national prominence for her brave fight against Texas legislative  assaults on women's medical rights, is now a candidate for governor and getting more attention to her rags-to-riches life story.

The Dallas Morning News reported over the weekend — and Davis acknowledges — that some details have been fudged. She vows to be "tighter" in her language in the future.

Fudging: She divorced at 21, not 19. So she wasn't a "teen" mother. She did live in a trailer. But only for a few months before she found an apartment. She remarried at 24 and that husband helped pay her expenses to complete college. He cared for her children when she attended Harvard law. That husband, by the way, has no quarrel himself with Davis' essential story of being someone who overcame financial and personal obstacles to succeed.

Republicans are lighting up social media with this supposed devastating story on Davis. I don't get it. Yes, she embellished. But the core story of a single mother who went back to school and became a lawyer despite modest circumstances looks about the same to me.

  • Another made-up Republican attack: The Saline County socialists are coming to take your business

The latest in bogus Republican political attacks comes from Saline County, where Steve Lux, chairman of the county Republican Committee, has sent a letter warning members of the Benton-Bryant Chamber of Commerce that a progressive group working to elect Democrats in the county is allied with a socialist group that wants nothing less than "the elimination of private business." This is, of course, nonsense.
