New Shoffner indictment released

Posted By on Fri, Feb 7, 2014 at 11:42 AM

The U.S. attorney's office has provided a copy of the new indictment against former Arkansas Treasurer Martha Shoffner.  As announced yesterday, it added 10 mail fraud counts to earlier extortion charges. The latest were for using money from a campaign account to pay credit card bills for personal expenses. The indictment rests on an Arkansas statute that prohibits use of campaign money for personal expenses.

Campaign funds. Personal expenses. Is that an echo from somewhere? Use of taxpayer money to reimburse a credit card company for personal expenses also presumably would earn a searching look from U.S. Attoney Chris Thyer.

Shoffner is to appear on the new charges Feb. 27. Her attorney, Chuck Banks, iindicated last night that he's still set to begin trial March 3 on the original charges.
