Child injured in hit-and-run on way home from school

The Little Rock police say a 12-year-old child was hit by a car while walking home from school at Baseline and Oman Roads yesterday. The driver of the car believed to have struck the child left the scene, but was arrested. The child is in stable condition, police said.

Report follows:

At 1631 hours, Officer Hughes and Officer Sumner approached the intersection of Baseline Road and Oman Road to find a hit and run had just occurred. A 12 year old child was lying in the street and it appeared that he had been hit by a blue Chevrolet Aveo. The driver saw the officers, then got into her car a left the scene. The officers immediately tended to the needs of the unconscious child. They simultaneously broadcast the information on the fleeing vehicle. Officers at Baseline Road and Chicot Road stopped the vehicle and took the driver into custody. Reconstruction, the Crime Scene Search Unit, and Sergeant Phillips were notified and responded to the scene.

The juvenile child who was hit while walking home from school and was transported by MEMS to Children’s Hospital. The victim’s mother arrived on scene and rode with him to Children’s Hospital. The driver, Estefana De Maria Garza-Alarcon (H/F, 09-20-91) was transported to the Southwest Sub-Station. Mrs. Garza-Alarcon was charged with Hit and Run (F) and No Driver’s License. A hold was placed on Mrs. Garaza-Alarcon as she was believed to be a flight risk. Mrs. Garza-Alarcon is a Guatemalan citizen.

The victim was later determined to be in stable condition and had non-life threatening serious injuries.
