City board to meet on Broadway Bridge land contribution

The Little Rock City Board will have a special meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday to clean up an omission from land donation to the project to reconstruct the Broadway Bridge. A city news release said that when the state Highway and Transportation Department filed documents with the federal government, which will pay for the project, it was discovered the property transfer didn't include some additional city property to accommodate a lane for buses going to and from the Robinson Auditorium.

Speaking of this coming downtown traffic nightmare:

The Highway Department sent notices to publications this week to solicit bids. They are to be opened Sept. 17. This gives a longer time than normal — 12 weeks rather than four — to prepare bids. This because of the complexity of the project.

The department has estimated closure of the bridge should occur early next year and that the construction period until reopening of the new bridge could take up to two years.

Spokesman Randy Ort said the bid terms include incentives to speed the work. There'd be an $80,000 per day incentive to beat the agreed closure per day and an $80,000 per day charge for failing to meet it.
