Nucor sues to stop Big River Steel plant in Mississippi County

Posted By on Tue, Aug 12, 2014 at 11:52 AM

Nucor Steel Arkansas and Nucor Yamato Steel, which operate steel mills near Blytheville, have filed suit in federal district court in Jonesboro to stop construction of the Big River Steel mill, an operation heavily subsidized by state and local tax money that's a venture by Nucor's former boss, John Correnti.

The lawsuit says the planned Osceola plant runs afoul of the Clean Air Act and specifically lists a number of ways tests for potential environmental impact fell short in the process of obtaining an air permit. Big River said pollution will negatively affect Nucor, its workforce, its customers and other territory in the same pollution discharge zone as Nucor.

Big River has not filed a response to the suit, filed last Thursday. It has been assigned to Judge Leon Holmes. The company had announced earlier that construction work had begun. The suit said notice of intention to sue was given Big River in late May and the company has not responded.
