Suspect says girlfriend shooting accidental

Posted By on Mon, Sep 22, 2014 at 10:53 AM

Marcus Horton, 37, of 608 E. 23rd, was charged with domestic battery Sunday after the shooting of his live-in girlfriend, Gloria Brown, 48.

Horton told police he was cleaning his gun and it went off and shot Brown. Brown said she was shot by Horton. She was treated for a shoulder wound.

Coincidentally, somebody sent me a piece in the Minnesota Post this morning about the research that shows the presence of a gun in a home is a health hazard. The article ran in 2012, but it remains of interest:

Having a gun in your home significantly increases your risk of death — and that of your spouse and children.

And it doesn’t matter how the guns are stored or what type or how many guns you own.

If you have a gun, everybody in your home is more likely than your non-gun-owning neighbors and their families to die in a gun-related accident, suicide or homicide.

Furthermore, there is no credible evidence that having a gun in your house reduces your risk of being a victim of a crime. Nor does it reduce your risk of being injured during a home break-in.

The NRA and other gun adherents probably would argue that episodes are deterrence and self-defense are not fully reported, explaining the statistical gap.
