A peek at corporate money buying governor's elections

Posted By on Wed, Sep 24, 2014 at 12:49 PM

The New York Times reports today on the unearthing of secret details on the corporate money pouring into the Republican Governors Association, which in turn is spending heavily in Arkansas and other states to win governor's seats.

Koch money naturally is high on the list.

Given the gridlock in Washington, action in the statehouses is of high interest to corporate lobbies. They give to Democrats, too.

Public Integrity today issued a report on estimated TV ad spending in each state. This is local TV spending only. It doesn't include cable and other forms of campaign expenditures. In this accounting, the candidates themselves were running close to even — $1.3 million spent by Mike Ross and $1.1 million spent by Asa Hutchinson.

Then came the outside money. The Republican Governors are shown in the estimates to have spent $846,000, generally attacking Mike Ross. The Democratic Governors group has spent $818,000, generally attacking Asa Hutchinson.
