Zoo cat exhibit to remain closed during city review

Little Rock City Manager Bruce Moore has asked new Assistant City Manager James Jones to lead an internal review of the Little Rock Zoo big cat exhibit and emergency response procedures as a result of last week's accident in which a three-year-old boy was seriously injured after falling over a railing into the exhibit.

Witnesses indicated the child may have been bitten by jaguars before the cats were driven back by a zoo employee with a fire extinguisher and the child was removed by ladder.

A statement from Moore said he expected the review to be completed within two weeks. Until t hen, the exhibit will be closed to the public.

I'm seeking an update on the child's condition from Children's Hospital. No authority has yet said definitively if puncture wounds and other injuries were inflicted by cats or in the child's fall.

UPDATE: From Children's:

"On Friday, Oct. 10, a child was transported to Arkansas Children’s Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in a fall at the Little Rock Zoo. Today, the child’s condition has been upgraded to stable with significant improvement. We respect the wishes of the child’s guardian who asked that the child’s name and any additional information not be shared at this time. Thank you for respecting the privacy of this family.”
