ESPN is reporting that the International Boxing Federation stripped boxer Jermain Taylor of his middleweight world title on Friday, just before he was supposed to defend his belt in a bout at a Biloxi, Miss. casino.

The IBF invoked a rule that says that any champion who is "ill, injured, under a legal impediment which would prevent the bout from taking place, or on suspension at the time the championships chairman and president order a bout under this rule shall be considered unavailable." Taylor is currently in custody, after allegedly pulling a gun on a family following Little Rock's parade honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. last month. At the time, Taylor was out on bond after an incident in August in which police say he shot his cousin at his home. His bond was subsequently revoked. A judge ordered a mental evaluation for Taylor on Jan. 27.

Taylor's promoter, Lou DiBella, reportedly told ESPN that Taylor will likely never box professionally again, with DiBella telling ESPN: "I have not even a thought into the future of his boxing career or whether he retains the title. It's about whether he can maintain control over his own life."

It was not even 24 hours ago that Sophia Said, director of the Interfaith Center; City Director Kathy Webb and others decided to organize a protest today of Donald Trump's executive order that has left people from Muslim countries languishing in airports or unable to come to the US at all — people with visas, green cards,a  post-doc graduate student en route to Harvard, Google employees abroad, families. I got the message today before noon; others didn't find out until it was going on. But however folks found out, they turned out in huge numbers, more than thousand men, women and children, on the grounds of the state Capitol to listen to speakers from all faiths and many countries.
